Biking park has great potential

By Tracey Roxburgh
Queenstown Times Monday 1st June

QUEENSTOWN had a ‘‘globally unique’’ asset in the Ben Lomond Forest mountain bike park which, in its inaugural season, has been hailed a ‘‘fantastic success’’.

Skyline Enterprises chief executive Jeff Staniland told the Queenstown Lakes District Council during draft annual plan submissions Skyline recorded 5000 riders, who completed 50,000 runs during its first season on the gondola assisted tracks — a number which would go up as the season extended in the 2011-12 summer, from September to April.

The track was opened for a trial four-month period in January and Skyline recorded 40% of users were international visitors. Of the New Zealand users, 40% were not local. The riders aged in range from 4-year-old twins to a 74-year-old. Even without promotion, the
‘‘publicity was huge’’. Included in the big names to use the tracks were the Atherton siblings, from the United Kingdom, along with New Zealand and German riders.

Mr Staniland told the council Skyline had committed to running a full season and based on last year’s figures, it could see up to 100,000 riders accessing the park.
‘‘There has been a lot of interest from tourism operators to package mountain biking into their products.

‘‘One Australian company told us they sold 8000 to Whistler out of Australia last year.

‘‘There could be
opportunities to create events. If we continue to develop it, we stand to create a community asset. ‘‘DQ has identified mountain biking as a strategic opportunity. ‘‘But if we are serious about Queenstown Incorporated, we need to see some sort of entity to manage the mountain bike park — a trust or an association.

‘‘It’s hard for us to go to a sponsor as Skyline and ask for money for something which isn’t ours.’’

Mr Staniland said Skyline had spent $500,000 on the trail, which included $150,000 on the construction of Hammy’s Trail, a 6km track around the outskirts of the forest. The company also tidied up many other tracks and removed
historic, dangerous tracks. Mr Staniland sought for a new association to be established, which would include council representation, to work together in developing the park and securing funding.

However, Wakatipu Trails Trust chief executive Kaye Parker said, when asked by Mayor Vanessa van Uden, that was not required.
The Trails Trust already collected funds on behalf of the Gibbston Community Association, destined for work on the likes of the Gibbston River Trail, and it was ‘‘not an issue’’ for it to collect funds on behalf of the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club or Skyline to be used on the mountain bike park.

When asked what Mrs Parker thought of another entity being established to help manage the Ben Lomond Forest, she said it was unnecessary. ‘‘Please don’t start another one. ‘‘Don’t spend any more
money . . . than you have already.’’

In a separate submission, the mountain bike club said it was ‘‘not dissimilar’’ to the trails trust, with a governance body comprising ‘‘like-minded members of the community’’.

‘‘To that end, the club supports the funding assigned to the Wakatipu Trails Trust through the annual plan process, but seeks this be increased.’’

The annual plan had set aside $20,000 for the club in the next financial year, which the club supported. While club spokesman Carey Vivian estimated the cost of Ben Lomond maintenance at $60,000 per annum, ‘‘we see that there are other opportunities to fundraise for that shortfall’’.
One idea was to ask bike-hire businesses and the like to contribute a $2 donation per bike towards the maintenance of the park.

‘‘Over eight months, the funds would add up.’’

Media release from Skyline Queenstown

Skyline Gondola to renew Mountain Bike access

Mark your calendars, Skyline Queenstown are planning to kick off a second season of
gondola access for mountain bikers in 2011/2012 once a management agreement has been
confirmed with Queenstown Lakes District Council. The second season, providing access to
Queenstown’s world class bike trails within the Ben Lomond Reserve, is planned to run for a
massive 8 months from September 2011 through to the end of April 2012*.

This longer season is expected to bring even more attention to Queenstown as bikers
continue to travel to fuel their demand for dirt, “We are very excited to be running a second
season of mountain biking and can’t wait to see the bike scene in Queenstown grow to reach
it’s full potential” Blair Deasy – General Manager, Skyline Queenstown.

In January 2011 Mountain Bike history was made when Skyline Queenstown opened New
Zealand’s only gondola accessed mountain bike lift. The lift has since hosted thousands of
riders within the 4 month trial season providing easy access to million dollar views and a
myriad of mountain bike trails. With the continuation of gondola access at Skyline the future of
mountain biking in Queenstown is set to take off.

QUEENSTOWN MOUNTAIN BIKE FESTIVAL SHOWCASES RESORT AS LEADING BIKING DESTINATION

QUEENSTOWN MOUNTAIN BIKE FESTIVAL SHOWCASES RESORT AS LEADING BIKING DESTINATION

The inaugural Queenstown Mountain Bike festival (April 16-25) is stacking up to be a showcase not only of some of New Zealand’s top riders but also Queenstown as a leading international biking destination.

The festival’s headline events are the New World Tour de Wakatipu, 36km or 45km ride from Arrowtown via Lake Hayes and along the Shotover and Kawarau Rivers for both expert and sport riders, the three day Ben Lomond Dirtmasters Downhill held on a challenging three kilometre course in the Ben Lomond Forest and open to elite riders only and the Outside Sports SUPER D Enduro, a six hour non-stop tag team or individual mountain bike race in the Ben Lomond Forest.

Festival Director Geoff Hunt says that with the entry of a team led by National Women’s Mountain Bike Champion Kate Fluker of Queenstown, and another by local exponent Josie Cederman in the Super D, there will be some good action in the women’s section.

“Other guns entered in the Super D include the mixed team of top performing rider Tim Mackersy of Dunedin and Queenstown’s Lauren Campbell who will provide a lot of excitement, along with former Olympian Kashi Leuchs and his team mate mountain bike specialist Lawrence Mote, who make up Team Yeti.”

Local gurus Geoff Small, whose name is synonymous with adventure sport, and Jim Hawkridge from Outside Sports think that the “Super D will be a super fast fun race. There will be some very technical sections and some great jumps. It is fantastic to have this event as part of the festival as it’s the sort of race that often gets left out. “

“There will be some top riding and the Super D will, along with the other events, show Queenstown as a place that provides great riding at all levels. Hopefully the inaugural festival will show what we can do here and attract good industry support in the future. In the big picture it has to be good for everyone involved.”

The Ben Lomond Dirtmasters Downhill will bring out the spectators with the finish on Sunday (April 24) in a specially staged arena in Brecon Street.

“World class downhill riders will fly down the Brecon Street steps taking air and it will be super spectacular,” says Hunt. “We will have a ‘hot seat’ where leaders sit until they are ejected by the next fastest rider. This format is exciting and DJ’s and commentators will keep the crowd up with the action.”

The Tour de Wakatipu on Saturday (April 23) is expected to host around 600 bikers riding from Arrowtown to Chard Farm vineyard while other events during the ten day festival include a Kids Ride in Jardine Park , a Peleton road bike ride through the Wakatipu and a Night time mountain bike ride along the trails and tracks of the Wakatipu..

A significant aspect of the festival, which Hunt hopes to grow, are the biking movies being screened at Reading Cinemas. and at Revolver.

“The New Zealand release ‘A Ride with George Hincapie’ is an entertaining film focusing on George during a training ride. Bike enthusiasts will love it. The other movie we’re showing is ‘9 Ball Diaries’ featuring Cyclocross which is a whole new style of riding and one which is expected to take off in the Wakatipu. There’s lots of racing through snow and mud on road bikes – quite amazing stuff.”

These movies will feature at Reading Cinema, while Revolver will show amongst other the mountain bike movie 'Follow Me' which featured Queenstown's mountain biking terrain.

Hunt is upbeat about the inaugural festival which is attracting national and international interest.
“With Queenstown becoming such an important biking mecca, just like Whistler in Canada and Morzine in France, we are confident that the annual festival will develop into a real winner. We are looking forward to hosting bikers from all over who will spread the word.”

Field is filling out

Over the weekend we had a confirmed entry from Geoff Small who has won the Coronet Peak version of the Super D before. A strong bet to push the pace during the day.

Other entries include two women's team - one lead by National Mtn bike Champion Kate Fluker and the other with local Josie Cederman. It will be a day long battle between these riders.

Tim Machersey from Dunedin has entered a mixed team with Lauren Campbell - looking a relaxed day? - think not. I am sure his lap times will be right up there.

And Lauren Williamson is racing as the only female in the over 35yr vet womens category

The track has been made

Jim (Outside Sports) and myself were on the mountain early in the morning Tuesday and have spent some time weed eating in the area known as Tom's Paddock.

We also went to a forest users group meeting and made a proposal about a small piece of walking track that we would like to use - to give the Super D a good feel. We expected a answer on Friday but did not get it.
Should have this Monday - check back here for the final version of the map

The exact track

The exact track for the Outside Sports SUPER D are still being decided.

I checked some last week and will do some more with Jim from Outside sports this next week, but probably be something like
Hammys to half way -> up on the road -> down a piece of Vertigo - back onto Hammys - down to about Lomond Crescent - up a old piece of forest road _. down some new track-. back onto Hammy's along to the staff car park and tag or ride the loop in the car park and then back thru the timing gate and onto the gondola.

More checking out tomorrow.

You will get 6hrs and one lap.

Each team or racer will be allocated an area marked out in the pit lane / transition area. The pit lane will be part of the race track and where teams transition. These will be allocated on a first in, best spot basis - so be early. Team members will need to pass the ‘baton’

What to bring
A bike that will get you to the end of a 6hr race- the Super D format is neither a DH or XC race but something in-between - the ideal bike is a 4-6inch travel all-mountain bike
Be warned - there is some uphill.

Bring parts that you may need – there is a bike shop on the mountain and Outside Sport will have a mechanic on duty with supplies during the day, but be sure to bring anything that may break - hangers, brake pads, tyres and tubes.
Eyes wear goggles or glasses.

I strongly recommend some form of knee protection!!!

This is a tough race and you will need plenty of food to get through the 6hrs.
We will have food and coffee available in the pit lane -

Shelter
Be prepared for hot and cold and windy.. Some type of shelter or clothing for when you’re not racing is a must. Easy ups or tents are ideal.

After the race
Prize giving will be about 5.00pm Skyline Restaurant

The Course for the SUPER D ENDURO

The Course
The course covers 7km down and up. Final design is yet to be done but the course will be designed to give ‘downhill riders’ and cross-country riders’ equal chances at being first at the end of the day.

Downhill sections will use Hammy’s Trail and perhaps some small sections of single track. Uphills will include road and some technical climbing.

At the end of the Hammy’s Trail riders cross straight into the Skyline staff parking into the support village and pit lanes with the track taking every competitor past every ‘pit’ on each lap.

Tag your team member, exchange the transmitter to release them on the track.

Each lap is expected to take 20 mins ie the maximum no of laps will be about 12

Times will be taken at the gondola gate ie as you enter the gondola system, an as you leave the board walk at the top. ie only downhill riding times count.

Notes to the SUPER D

Queenstown Sports SUPER D
16th April

Notes to the SUPER D Checkout Mon 28th February
In early January the Resource Consent application was made for two events in the Queenstown Bike Festival. The DirtMasters and the Outside Sports SUPER D. The application contains safety plans, operational plans etc etc........, but I also drew then a course map. This map, a educated guess at the time, will end up being very close to the actual course.

The final course design is yet to be done but it is for sure that a lot of the downhilling section will be on the Hammy’s Trail created by Skyline. How this is mixed with the uphill sections is yet to be decided, but today we checked out a uphill section on the Skyline road, another downhill section on Vertigo and a old uphill trail called Huckit. This is a interesting uphill climb on single track - all rideable. So the formulae is in place, it is just trying now to get the mix exactly right.

Today Jim Hawkridge (Outside Sports) and I checked out some of the course and a rough video of it is on YOUTUBE at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejFLk0b3ry8

Operations
The Skyline Gondola has assured us of every second car for the duration of the 6hrs and there will be no other bikers able to use the gondola.

Timing is going to be done at the end and start of each run, so it will be the racing time that will count.

Full information will be on the web site http://www.queenstownbikefestival.co.nz prior to the opening of entries on the 15th March.

Note: this is not the Brake Burner but a new event called the Outside Sports SUPER D ENDURO.
