QUEENSTOWN MOUNTAIN BIKE FESTIVAL SHOWCASES RESORT AS LEADING BIKING DESTINATION

QUEENSTOWN MOUNTAIN BIKE FESTIVAL SHOWCASES RESORT AS LEADING BIKING DESTINATION

The inaugural Queenstown Mountain Bike festival (April 16-25) is stacking up to be a showcase not only of some of New Zealand’s top riders but also Queenstown as a leading international biking destination.

The festival’s headline events are the New World Tour de Wakatipu, 36km or 45km ride from Arrowtown via Lake Hayes and along the Shotover and Kawarau Rivers for both expert and sport riders, the three day Ben Lomond Dirtmasters Downhill held on a challenging three kilometre course in the Ben Lomond Forest and open to elite riders only and the Outside Sports SUPER D Enduro, a six hour non-stop tag team or individual mountain bike race in the Ben Lomond Forest.

Festival Director Geoff Hunt says that with the entry of a team led by National Women’s Mountain Bike Champion Kate Fluker of Queenstown, and another by local exponent Josie Cederman in the Super D, there will be some good action in the women’s section.

“Other guns entered in the Super D include the mixed team of top performing rider Tim Mackersy of Dunedin and Queenstown’s Lauren Campbell who will provide a lot of excitement, along with former Olympian Kashi Leuchs and his team mate mountain bike specialist Lawrence Mote, who make up Team Yeti.”

Local gurus Geoff Small, whose name is synonymous with adventure sport, and Jim Hawkridge from Outside Sports think that the “Super D will be a super fast fun race. There will be some very technical sections and some great jumps. It is fantastic to have this event as part of the festival as it’s the sort of race that often gets left out. “

“There will be some top riding and the Super D will, along with the other events, show Queenstown as a place that provides great riding at all levels. Hopefully the inaugural festival will show what we can do here and attract good industry support in the future. In the big picture it has to be good for everyone involved.”

The Ben Lomond Dirtmasters Downhill will bring out the spectators with the finish on Sunday (April 24) in a specially staged arena in Brecon Street.

“World class downhill riders will fly down the Brecon Street steps taking air and it will be super spectacular,” says Hunt. “We will have a ‘hot seat’ where leaders sit until they are ejected by the next fastest rider. This format is exciting and DJ’s and commentators will keep the crowd up with the action.”

The Tour de Wakatipu on Saturday (April 23) is expected to host around 600 bikers riding from Arrowtown to Chard Farm vineyard while other events during the ten day festival include a Kids Ride in Jardine Park , a Peleton road bike ride through the Wakatipu and a Night time mountain bike ride along the trails and tracks of the Wakatipu..

A significant aspect of the festival, which Hunt hopes to grow, are the biking movies being screened at Reading Cinemas. and at Revolver.

“The New Zealand release ‘A Ride with George Hincapie’ is an entertaining film focusing on George during a training ride. Bike enthusiasts will love it. The other movie we’re showing is ‘9 Ball Diaries’ featuring Cyclocross which is a whole new style of riding and one which is expected to take off in the Wakatipu. There’s lots of racing through snow and mud on road bikes – quite amazing stuff.”

These movies will feature at Reading Cinema, while Revolver will show amongst other the mountain bike movie 'Follow Me' which featured Queenstown's mountain biking terrain.

Hunt is upbeat about the inaugural festival which is attracting national and international interest.
“With Queenstown becoming such an important biking mecca, just like Whistler in Canada and Morzine in France, we are confident that the annual festival will develop into a real winner. We are looking forward to hosting bikers from all over who will spread the word.”

Field is filling out

Over the weekend we had a confirmed entry from Geoff Small who has won the Coronet Peak version of the Super D before. A strong bet to push the pace during the day.

Other entries include two women's team - one lead by National Mtn bike Champion Kate Fluker and the other with local Josie Cederman. It will be a day long battle between these riders.

Tim Machersey from Dunedin has entered a mixed team with Lauren Campbell - looking a relaxed day? - think not. I am sure his lap times will be right up there.

And Lauren Williamson is racing as the only female in the over 35yr vet womens category

The track has been made

Jim (Outside Sports) and myself were on the mountain early in the morning Tuesday and have spent some time weed eating in the area known as Tom's Paddock.

We also went to a forest users group meeting and made a proposal about a small piece of walking track that we would like to use - to give the Super D a good feel. We expected a answer on Friday but did not get it.
Should have this Monday - check back here for the final version of the map
